This vase belongs to my ‘wilde klei’ collection,  were I work with clay sourced directly from the surrounding landscape. For this particular piece, the clay was harvested from Ebenhaezer, a farm located in the Witzenberg Valley, Western Cape of South Africa. This region, rich in mudstone and siltstone formations, is characterised by fine-grained sediments dating back to the Devonian period.

In the earth, clay forms in distinct layers, each with its own unique composition and properties. The clay used for this vase was collected from the lowest strata, rich in metals and minerals. In its raw state, the clay has a coarse, grainy texture that is challenging to work with, and a deep orange hue. However, when fired to 1200°C, it transforms into a striking deep red, reminiscent of dried blood, and reveals a subtle metallic sheen upon closer inspection.

The interior of the vase is glazed with a clear gloss finish, which serves almost as a filter for the clay, preserving its yellow undertones. This gives the glaze a unique colour, making it appear more than just transparent.
