This vase is part of my ‘wilde klei’ collection, where I work with clay harvested from the very landscape surrounding me. For this piece, the clay was sourced from Ebenhaezer, a farm nestled in the Witzenberg Valley of the Western Cape, South Africa. The area is rich in mudstone and siltstone deposits, formed by fine-grained sediments dating back to the Devonian period. The clay from this valley has an unusual amount of volcanic ash present, making it especially moldable and elastic.
The interior of the vase is glazed with a silica-based finish, giving it a polished, lustrous sheen. The glaze also contains feldspar and copper oxides, which, when fired in an oxidized kiln (a kiln with abundant oxygen throughout the process), impart a greenish tint.
